プリマスにあるアトランティック・イナーシャル・システム（AIS)は、ジャイロスコー プの故郷です。同社の歴史は、20世紀初頭のスペリー・ジャイロスコープ・カン パニーまで遡ることができます。創設者の天才エルマー・スペリーは、「私はジャ イロスコープの将来を信じて疑わない。この装置が、科学界と産業 界で最も重 宝される者の一つになることは、当然のことである」と言っています。 旧ブリティッシュエアロスペースとBAEシステム（現在の、AIS)は、Southway に 300人の従業員を抱え、ハイパフォーマンスのナビゲーションシステム、慣性セ ンサーシステム、そしてもちろん、シリコンセンサーを搭載したジャイロスコープを 生産しています。この業績によって、2003年にQueens Award for Enterprise を受賞しました。 2003年に、BAEシステムは社内要件を洗い出し、ソフトウエアと生産プロセスの 連携方法を分析しました。その結果をもとに、マイクロソフトおよび同社のパート ナーであるCorporate Project Solutions(CPS)とともに、Microsoft Project のEPMソリューションの潜在能力をディスカッションしました。

•製造部門のいくつかのチームが、別のロケーションに移動。それに伴って、下記プロジェクト管理要求を実現するため のテクノロジーを実装する必要がでてきた： •プロジェクト計画プロセスのシンプル化 •小さい組織には、プロジェクトサポートスタッフは尐数で足りるが、チームメンバーの地理的な距離が遠くな ると、サポートは難しくなる。そこで、レポート作成のシンプル化、より効果的なリソース割り当てツールとプ ロセス、シンプル化された時間管理の実現が必須に •スプレッドシート形式のシステム •プロジェクトオフィスのサポートを前提としたツールやシステムを導入した場合、プロジェクトオフィスに他の 仕事がある場合に十分なサポートができず、エンドユーザーから不満が出る可能性がある。そこで、使いな れたスプレッドシート形式システムを採用したい •マイクロソフトのEPMソリューションを使うと、下記を実現できる： ・プロジェクト情報の中央集約によって、オンラインで他の関係者が情報を参照できるような仕組みがあるので、レ ポートを作成する煩わしさが軽減（プロジェクト・プランを一か所に集約、アクセス制御、Webベースでのプランニン グをサポート） ・リソース管理機能により、各リソースのスキル等属性に基づいた全リソースリスト ・プロジェクト横断的なレポートをサポートするプログラム／ポートフォリオ管理機能 ・プロジェクトおよび非プロジェクト時間を収集するためのWebベースのタイムシート（残業時間管理）機能
