Ernie  What conflict is introduced in the first paragraph? Ernie’s trouble with jobs.

COMPREHENSION  How did Ernie mess up each summer

job? He mowed tomato plants, got water inside a car he washed, and pulled up flowers when gardening.  Why is Ernie surprised to get this job? Because he has messed up other jobs. .

Yes, he solved the problem by replacing the fish. No, he was dishonest and should have said it died.

COMPREHENSION  What does Mrs. Benson know?

The fish in the bowl is not Jaws

THINK IT THROUGH  Why does Mrs. Benson think Ernie did a good job?

She knows the fish was dead before she left.  When in the story do you think the conflict begin? When Ernie gets the job (lines 13-16) When Jaws is dead (lines 29-31)  Should Ernie feel guilty about taking extra money? Why or why not? No, he paid to replace the fish with his own money & wasn’t responsible for its death.

CAUSE a reason why something happens

Because Ernie has not succeeded at any job so far.

His dad thinks he will be a bum someday.

The fish is floating on the top of the water.

So Ernie knows the fish is dead.
