There are many great books out there, but we should not teach from a selected list. Reading opens up new ideas, thoughts, and connects to our prior knowledge and experiences. I believe that we should teach children to have a love and a desire to read. We, as teachers should expose them to a variety of literature that they find something interesting and have a passion for. I think if we could just unlock the interests in some of these children they would learn to appreciate the world of books. I have always loved to read books and different kinds of books. I remember reading comic books such as Betty and ?. I remember making my mom buy me every one that came out at the supermarket. I remember my teachers doing read a-louds with chapter books such as "Ramona." Especially our librarian who always dressed up and made reading so fascinating when she read us fairy tales and fables. Reading should not take place when it is mandatory, but take place for the sake of pleasure and expanding our knowledge with new ideas, opinions, and discoveries. “Learning is not doing- it is changing what we do” (Skinner, 1989a,p15).
