Limit System Interconnects to Maintain Digital Signal Integrity Maintaining signal integrity is crucial to any AV System design whether it is analog, digital, or a combination of both . Digital signals are susceptible to degradation from any number of factors; including system interconnects, such as gender changers, placed in the signal path . Digital signals are either on or off by nature, with virtually no middle ground . Signal losses due to cable attenuation or multiple interconnection points within the signal path can result in a frozen or partially frozen image, or abrupt gaps of lost image data, and can be disruptive to image display, even disabling it completely . Common symptoms include color sparkles, flashing and, in the worst case, a blank screen . A digital signal can go from “good” to “gone” almost instantaneously, a phenomenon known as “cliff effect .” The digital signal is said to have “hit the cliff,” the threshold below which it cannot be recovered . Figure 1 depicts the result of a 1920x1200 DVI source signal at the end of a high-quality 12-foot (3 .6 m) cable connected directly to the source device . Figure 2 depicts the result of the same 1920x1200 DVI source signal after passing through a high quality 6 foot (1 .8 m) DVI cable, then through a DVI female-to-female coupler, and finally an additional 6 foot DVI cable . This emphasizes the importance of proper design considerations for management of all high resolution digital signals . Each point of connection within a digital signal path introduces some degree of signal attenuation or degradation . System interconnects should be kept to a minimum, and signal distribution equipment should always feature signal conditioning capabilities to best accommodate specific design challenges that may compromise digital video signal integrity .

Evaluating Digital Signal Paths Eye patterns, the representation of a digital signal on an oscilloscope, are used to evaluate the quality of digital signals when passed through cables or signal extension devices, switchers, signal processors, or other electronics . The signal becomes more and more susceptible to discontinuities along the cable . Such discontinuities cause reflections which will degrade the signal .

USB Extender Series Twisted Pair Extender for USB Peripherals The USB Extender Series enables USB peripheral devices to be remotely located up to 450 feet (135 meters) from the host computer. Cable Cubby® 200 Furniture-Mountable Enclosure for Cables and One AC Power Outlet The Cable Cubby® 200 provides inconspicuous access to one AC power outlet and accommodates two single-space or one double-space AAP Architectural Adapter Plates and up to three data, audio, or video cables. The Extron line of optional AAPs allows you to customize the Cable Cubby with almost any kind of pass-through connectivity required. Cables can be pulled through the openings in the adjustable panels — which can be set up for varying cable diameters and connector types — and then pushed back through to be stored out of sight until needed. Cable Cubby® Power Modules AC Power Modules for Use with Select Cable Cubby and TLP Touchlink® Cable Cubby Enclosures Extron Cable Cubby® Power Modules are double- or triple-space AAP-sized power modules. They feature one or two unswitched AC power outlets and are designed to work with most Cable Cubby® Series and all furniture-mountable TouchLink® touchpanels. The US model is a double-space AAP-sized module and features two unswitched AC outlets with an attached 9.5' power cord. Models for most world markets are triplespace AAP-sized modules and feature one unswitched AC outlet with an IEC power connector. TLP 700TV 7” Tabletop TouchLink™ Touchpanel The Extron TLP 700TV 7” Tabletop TouchLink Touchpanel is designed for tabletop use or VESA mounting. In addition to the seveninch, full-color high resolution touchscreen, the ten field-labelable backlit buttons provide expanded control capabilities to ensure that critical functions are easily accessible. An integrated MTP twisted pair receiver accepts S-video or composite video and audio input signals over standard CAT 5 cable. Half Rack Shelf System Half-Rack Width Rack Shelf and Accessories The Extron Half Rack Shelf System of rack shelves and related accessories is designed for applications utilizing one-half rack width and smaller products. The compact, 1U half-rack width size allows the mounting of half-, quarter-, and eighth-rack products in space-constrained furniture such as lecterns and cabinets that are not wide enough to support the mounting of full width, 19” rack shelves or electronics. The Half-Rack System is comprised of the HRB 109 Basic Rack Shelf; the HRU 109 Universal Rack Shelf Kit, which includes eighth-rack and quarter-rack false faceplates; and HRP 100 Blank Panel. AVTrac® 580 Modular Low Profile Floor-Mount Raceway System for Power, Data, and AV Connectivity The Extron AVTrac® is a low profile, floormounted raceway system that provides a customizable, cost-effective alternative to floor coring for poke-through devices, trenching for floor boxes, or raised access flooring. AVTrac® AAP 110 Enclosure AAP Enclosure for AVTrac 580 System The AVTrac® AAP Enclosure is designed for use with the AVTrac  580 FloorMount Raceway System. The enclosure includes two double-space and two triplespace AAP Architectural Adapter Plate openings sufficient for mounting up to 10 single-space AAPs. USB Extender Series Twisted Pair Extender for USB Peripherals The USB Extender Series enables USB peripheral devices to be remotely located up to 450 feet (135 meters) from the host computer.
